Wortmanville/Bent Street thrash Laing Avenue to reach final
WORTMANVILLE/BENT STREET thrashed Laing Avenue 6-1 compliments of an Anthony Abrams hat-trick in their semi-final matchup when the first annual Stag Beer-sponsored Grassroots Foundation Inter-ward tourney continued on Thursday at the Georgetown Football Club ground. Wortmanville/Bent Street took an early lead through a Jahaal Greaves volleyed shot into the left side of the net in the seventh minute.
Abrams then asserted himself into the game, netting through a header into the empty net after collecting a pass from the left side, unmarked, inside the penalty area.
His double was achieved one minute later through a powerful finish into the top left-hand corner of the net, after stealing the ball between the defender and goalkeeper inside the penalty box.
John Waldron’s 34th minute sending-off for showing dissent to the referee halted Wortmanville/Bent Street’s charge as Abrams netted his hat-trick with a clinical penalty kick into the right hand corner.
Laing Avenue finally registered a goal in the 45th minute through a Selwyn Isaacs header into the back of the net from a corner kick.
Anthony Abrams of Laing Avenue was then sent off for handling the ball inside the penalty box in the 60th minute. Stepping to execute the penalty kick was Sheldon Holder who missed his effort to the right.
Holder’s earlier miss proved meaningless as Dwight Peters netted with an easy finish into the back of the net after collecting a missed clearance by the Laing Avenue keeper.
Sheldon Profit then capped off the fine win in the 90th minute, slotting home his shot down the right side of the goal.
Wortmanville will match skills with North East La Penitence in the final on Monday (5th) at the same venue, after the latter defeated North/South Ruimveldt 3-0.
Leading North East La Penitence with a double in the 70th and 75th minutes was Andrew Murray Jr. while Randolph Wagner netted a first-half goal in the 15th minute.
