DERRICK Persaud, 53, an upholsterer/joiner of Lot 45 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice was fined $40,000 by Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday for stealing tyre jell and ovaltine from a Shell Service Station.
The thief pleaded guilty to the offence which was committed on Tuesday, March 25, at Regent and King Street, Georgetown, he stole the merchandise, valued $3,285.Police Corporal Dinero Jones, prosecuting, said, that day, around 13:00 hrs, the thief went into the supermarket section of the business place and stole the items mentioned.
He attempted to escape but was caught by the security guard on duty and the articles were recovered on his person before a report was made to the police.
The prosecutor informed the court that Persaud was previously convicted on May 8, 2013, for a similar offence at Bounty Supermarket, in the city, as well, for which he was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.
The alternative to paying the fine for the latest conviction will result in Persaud serving six months imprisonment.
