A WOMAN who attempted to post a bale of toilet paper to the interior is facing a charge of trafficking in narcotics after a quantity of marijuana was allegedly found in the package. Sharon Campbell, 39, of Lot 826 Section ‘C’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara was refused bail, yesterday, by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry when she appeared in court on a charge of trafficking in narcotics.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on Thursday, January 23 at Light and Charlotte Streets, Georgetown, she had 24 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Inspector Michael Grant, prosecuting, said the defendant went to River Crest Shipping Company, located at Light and Charlotte Streets to post a package to Mazaruni. During a procedural check, it was observed that in a bale of toilet paper three rolls were replaced with black plastic bags containing weeds, seeds and stems suspected to be the illegal substance.
After she was told of the offence, she reportedly offered the security officer her last sum of money not to report the matter, but the officer refused the bribe and the case was reported to the police.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Clyde Forde representing Campbell said his client was asked by a friend to post a package to the interior and the illegal substance was discovered among toilet paper when checked by the security guard.
The defence counsel said his client is suffering from hypertension and denied any knowledge of the marijuana.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail on the grounds that the defence lawyer did not provide the court with any special reason for his client to be granted pretrial liberty.
The objection was upheld and the matter was transferred to today before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
