Night Shelter resident jailed on assault charge

A RESIDENT of the East La Penitence Night Shelter was found guilty yesterday by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond on an assault charge and sentenced to one month imprisonment.

Leon Daniels pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was first read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
According to the charge, on January 29 at Arapaima Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Janice Heywood. According to Daniels, the virtual complainant kept pushing him out of a yard and he tried to suppress her arms.
He disclosed to the court, “I was deported from Antigua after getting into a cutlass story.”
Heywood who is a security guard said that she spoke to him on several occasions not to enter the yard but he still insisted.
However, after bail was refused the matter was transferred before Magistrate Chandan-Edmond for trial.
The trial was conducted yesterday before Magistrate Chandan-Edmond and Daniels was found guilty as charged.
