Private vehicles ownership creating history

THE recent end of the PP and RR series and commencement of the SS classification has been described as the shortest such period for the exhaustion of private (P) category motor vehicles in Guyana.

It also meant that more Guyanese have bought vehicles in the 2013 vehicular calendar, than any other time in the country’s history.
But even outside of the 2012 to 2013 statistics, Guyana was already leading The Bahamas, India, and a host of other developed countries to become one of the top 100 countries worldwide with the largest number of cars per capita and one of the leading 20 developing nations with the most personal ownership.
While a 2011 World Bank report had used old data (since 2008) to make its compilation of Guyanese vehicle owners, the global financial institution has, since, compare new figures for 2009 to 2011 to surmise that Guyana has now shifted from number 107 to potential number 84, which may put it ahead of more than a hundred other countries that were considered in the bank’s review.
Though the Wikipedia Encyclopedia still uses the 2008 rating on its website that rates Guyana at number 107, the Encyclopedia Britannica has this country at number 92, using a 2010 global automobile industry census.
This means that almost four out of every ten eligible Guyanese now own a motor vehicle.
Although such a rapid increase in vehicle ownership may be a sign of strong socio-economic growth, many commuters are already wary of the daily traffic congestion that is now plaguing the country and are asking Government to consider adding new roadways to cater for the soaring rate at which cars are put out.
