Youth remanded over escape from lawful custody during break and enter probe

A 19-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday after he allegedly escaped from lawful custody while being processed following a report that he broke and entered his father’s place.Appearing for the first time at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Nevell Dundas, (no address given) was not required to plead to the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The prosecution refused to make the application for Dundas to plead at this stage since he was expected to have additional charges to answer. Dundas is alleged to have been under investigation while being in police custody on November 25 at the North Ruimveldt Police Station when he escaped from police custody.
According to Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, at 12:30 hrs the defendant was arrested by Constable Major for an alleged break and enter offence he committed at his father’s place.
The rank arrested him and took him into custody, Mangru said, and about 20:00 hrs the accused indicated that he wished to make a confession concerning the matter.
The police fell for his ploy and after they decided to take the statement from him, the defendant jumped from the counter and started to run. He was later caught by policemen who pursued him and took him back into custody.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. The magistrate then remanded Dundas to prison and set his next court date for December 5.
