DISTRICT 5 (West Coast Berbice) is all fired up for the start of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU)/Ministry of Education (MoE)/Digicel sponsored 53rd Annual Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships which get underway tomorrow.The District’s Sports Representative Joycelyn Sears said while they do not have a strong cycling or swimming team, they are confident of finishing among the top three District in the Track and Field aspect of the championships which has been dominated by Districts 11 and 10 over the past 26 years.
Sears said her District has been known over the years for dominating the young age groups in track and field as well as the middle and long distances in the track championships and this year will be no different.
She said the athletes are going through their final set of preparation under the guidance of Royston McDonald and Mario Roberts and to date they are 90 percent ready to take on all challengers in the student track and field championships.
The championships get underway tomorrow with the boys and girls cycle road race which will be followed by the swimming championships at the Castellani Swimming Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
The students’ track and field championships as well as the teachers’ track and field championships and the track cycling events will get underway on Wednesday at the Providence National Stadium.
District 11 (North Georgetown) is the Champion of Champions defending champions, having wrested the title from 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani). Between them (District 10 and District 11), they have shared the title for 26 years with each of them winning it for 13 years each.
District 6 (Corentyne) has won on six occasions.
Meanwhile, a number of longstanding records were broken last year and many more are expected to be broken this year.
