WPO condemns the harassment of Ms Geetanjalie Singh

THE Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) has condemned the recent outbursts from leading members of the joint opposition in relation to the questioning of the integrity of Audit Director at the Auditor General’s Office, Ms. Geetanjalie Singh. In a press release issued yesterday, the women’s arm of the People’s Progressive party (PPP) stated that Ms. Singh is a sound professional who fully embodies the ethical and moral values of her profession and none of her detractors has been able to point to a single incident that brings her integrity into question.

“Our country needs more Geetanjalie Singhs! We say to those who are bent on maligning her character for narrow political gains to back off and leave her alone. Their time can be better spent on reflecting on their own integrity and tainted past,” the WPO stated.
The WPO therefore demanded that Ms. Singh’s detractors show respect for her integrity and professionalism as a working woman, while highlighting that she is a professional woman with over 21 years of experience in the field that she chooses for a career.
“She is a Chartered Accountant and with great sacrifice and perseverance she has distinguished herself as a leading practitioner in accounting and auditing. Any woman who has climbed the professional ladder can attest to the level of determination and commitment that is necessary to build a career,” the release stated.
The WPO in the release declared that Ms. Singh is entitled to practice her profession in any capacity in which she chooses to and that she is an outstanding example and inspiration to the many young women in Guyana who aspire to professional careers.
“Yet she has become the victim of spurious logic of men who should know better and who themselves cannot stand up to professional scrutiny,” the WPO stated.
The release added that it is well established that in the day to day work of the Auditor General’s Office, Ms. Singh recuses herself and her staff from any work that has to do with the Ministry of Finance or any of the agencies for which her husband, as Minister of Finance has responsibility.
