Trio accused of stealing 500 bunches of plantain valued $1.7M

THREE men who allegedly stole 500 bunches of plantains from a farm at Jackson Creek, Corentyne, were each placed on $70,000 bail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the New Amsterdam Court.Lakeram Prashad, Suresh Singh and Goordat Bohee, are all sawmill labourers who reside at Vishal Sawmill compound, Springlands.

The virtual complainant, Faree Ramatali, reported that he owns over 3000 plantain suckers. On entering his farmland on October 17, 2013, he observed that several stalks, on which his personal markings were inscribed, were lying on the foreshore.
As a result, he went to his farm where he discovered that 500 bunches, valued $1,750,000, had been removed.  Following intense enquiries, a canter truck was seen with some of the marked stalks and the trio was subsequently charged.
