PHYSICAL education Officer within the Ministry of Education Allison Rollins yesterday showered praise on Directors of Petra Organization Troy Mendonca and Marlon Cole, for their sterling efforts in promoting football at the nursery level.
Rollins was at the time, giving brief remarks at the opening ceremony of the second Courts (Guyana) Inc. in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Banks DIH sponsored Petra Organization Pee-Wee football tournament at the Banks DIH, Thirst Park ground yesterday morning.
Apart from the above mentioned trio, also present at the opening ceremony yesterday morning, which followed the march past of the 24 participating schools, was Courts Marketing Manager Pernell Cummins, teachers, parents and guardians of the respective students.
“I know the organizers have put a lot of thought into this tournament and of course I am glad they have seen the importance of harnessing the talent of the players at this grass root level, which bodes well for our national team, the Golden Jaguars.
Everyone would not win today, but at the end of the day, all of you would be winners and this has only been made possible, through the hard work of the Directors of Petra Organization, who found it best to look after the nursery of Georgetown’s football, since everyone is focusing mostly on the older players such as Under-17, 19 and even the senior players” said Rollins.
In his brief remarks, Cole thanked the sponsors who joined forces with his organization to make the tournament a reality the second time around, while he expressed gratitude to the schools who responded positively to their request to participate.
“We are very pleased to see the schools out here today. Thanks to the parents and teachers, but particularly the players and heartfelt thanks to Courts and Banks DIH, who allowed us to use their facilities and ensured these youngsters who are out here this morning, cannot only play, but have fun doing so as well.
We know some persons are thinking about winning and that is all right, but our main focus at the Petra Organization, is to bring you guys together, the players and students to have lots of fun this morning and we are sure that at the end of the tournament, these students will have camaraderie with each other like never before” posited Cole.
He added, “They will learn to share ideas and even be competitive amongst themselves as school teams, so we are very pleased about this and hopefully, those things that we may have missed this year, we will have them in place next year, where we hope to have a bigger and much more smoother tournament.”
Like Rollins and Cole, Cummins also applauded the efforts of the students who will be representing their respective schools in the tournament, while he took the opportunity to wish each and everyone of them the best of luck.
