THE WEST Demerara based Wolf Warriors lineup, who through their skipper Amit Rai, overpowered Berbice’s Universal DVD Titans by eight wickets in their quarterfinal fixture of the second annual Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. 12/12 championship at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.
Also booking a place in the final four which will precede the finals at the same venue today were defending champions Memorex, Regal and Trophy Stall, who all defeated Invaders, Recharge and Speedboat, to join Wolf Warriors in today’s semifinals.
Batting first, Titans recovered from 42 for 3 in the seventh over to reach 103 for 7 from their 12 overs, with Chandrashaker Arjune 25 (5×4), Troy Gonsalves 19 (2×4, 1×6) and skipper Balram Samaroo 18 leading their batting.
Anthony Gill took 2 for 18 for Wolf Warriors, who looked on gleefully as their skipper plundered eight sixes and three fours in his 82, reaching his 50 with six sixes, while the team scored 106 for 2 from 9.5 overs, to complete an easy victory in the first quarterfinal.
In the second match of the day, Memorex were asked to bat first by Invaders and thanks to Alvin Ramdass 29 (3×4, 1×6), Seon Hetmyer 27 (2×4) and skipper Roy Jaffarally 25 (2×6, 2×4), scored 115 for 5 from their 12 overs.
Michael Matura took 2 for 16 for Invaders, who were limited to 103 for 9 by the defending champions, with only Arvin Seepersaud 47 offering any resistance to the bowling of Joshua Garnett, who took 4 for 17 to steer his side to a 12 run win.
Speed Boat and Trophy Stall took the field for the third quarterfinal, after the Recharge team was trapped by the Demerara Harbor Bridge which had opened, making it impossible to keep their scheduled appearance with Regal.
Batting first, Speed Boat made 109 for 7, thanks to Wazir Hussain 36 (3×6, 1×4) and Greg Singh 32 (2×6, 1×4), even as Ravindra Ramnauth took 1 for 17 for Trophy Stall who in reply were always with their back against the wall, until Seochan Boodhoo struck the last delivery of the contest for a six, with four needed for victory.
His shot enabled Trophy Stall to reach 112 for 6 from their 12 overs to claim a four wicket victory, with Surujpaul Deosarran 36 (2×6, 1×4), Fazal Rafiek 32 (2×4, 1×6) and Randy Ketwaroo 19 92×6) contributing to their team’s win, while Lantely Hinds took 2 for 19 for Speed Boat.
In the final match of the day, Safraz Esau powered his way to a robust unbeaten 94 (11×6, 1×4) which together with Patrick Rooplall’s 24 (2×4), steered Regal to an imposing 142 for 3 from their 10 overs, with the game being reduced due to time, following consultation with both skippers.
In reply, Ricardo Adams 16 (2×6) and Dawson Joseph 44 (3×6, 1×4) powered their team to 54 without loss after 3 overs, keeping them ahead of the run rate, but when Adams was dismissed, wickets fell rapidly after and when the game was called to halt due to bad light, Recharge were 85 for 6 after 8 overs, in comparison to Regal’s 115 for 1.
In today’s semifinals which bowls off at 10:00hrs, Trophy Stall and Wolf Warriors will go head to head in a repeat of the 2011 GT&T finals while Memorex and Regal will meet in the other, which in itself is a repeat of the finals of the first 12/12 champions.
The winners will clash in the finals which will be broadcasted live on NCN Radio.
