GFA Players Cup : Fruta Conquerors and Pele drew fixture

HOST CLUB Fruta Conquerors and Pele Football Club played to a 1-1 draw when action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup recommenced at the Tucville Community Centre ground last Friday night.

Dwayne Lawrence opened the scoring for the Tucville in the 39th minute while Royston Dublin equalised for Pele in the 87th minute.

Getting the better of the attacking exchanges in the opening period, Lawrence would break the deadlock as he collected a pin point Gerald Grittens left footed cross from the left flank to finish unmarked into the open net.

It what would prove to be a game of two halves, Pele almost found the equaliser in the 72nd minute through a powerful Shemroy Arthur right footed free kick, only to be denied brilliantly from Alex Murray between uprights as he tipped the resulting effort just over the crossbar.

Pele however would not be denied as lanky forward Dublin intercepted a poor back pass intended for Murray from defender Delon Williams before easily finishing after shrugging off a challenge from the keeper to earn his side a share of the spoils

Sampson Gilbert, coach of the Tucville side during an invited comment said “Generally we dominated the game and overall we created more chances but our lack of discipline and finishing allowed Pele to score”.

“We going back to the park and I am optimistic we can alleviate that problem of finishing shortly” said Gilbert.

Coach of Pele FC, Barry Meyers in a post-match comment said “It was a good game, we glad we got the draw. We played favourably in the second half after the players settle down. All in all our players got to step up because we are not getting it right”.

In the opening fixture, Alpha United earned a walkover victory against Flamingo FC.

Action continues today (Sunday) at the same venue with four slated fixtures. The feature contest at 20:00hrs will see Pele FC facing off with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in crucial group ‘B’ matchup.

In the opening game at 14:00hrs, Houston Stars will oppose the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in a group ‘C’ showdown while Beacon FC tackles BK Western Tigers in a group ‘D’ match at 16:00hrs.
