THE SECOND Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. (GSCL)-organised 12/12 tournament received a boost yesterday when Devi Sunich, the wife of Managing Director of Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and Hadi’s City Mall, Ramesh Sunich, handed over the winners’ trophy to the organisers first vice-president Ian John.

Such a gesture, underlined the corporate support which has been forthcoming for this tournament, the second of its kind, following a successful inaugural tournament last May – a fact that was highlighted by Director of Sport within the National Sports Commission Neil Kumar, at the opening ceremony three weeks ago.
“The first tournament you had was indeed successful. I was following it in the press and definitely I know that this your second tournament will be a successful one as well and it says that the GSCL Inc. is setting a good example.
“When I look at the list of sponsors you have sponsoring this second tournament, it is indeed encouraging and it shows also that those persons are confident and have placed their trust in the executive members of the GSCL Inc., while the uniformity of the teams shows the growth of the sport,” said Kumar.
In this regard, Mr Sunich in an invited comment following the presentation yesterday said he felt pleased to be associated with the GSCL Inc with another one of their tournaments, adding that his team has reached the quarterfinals stage of the present tournament.
“The GSCL Inc. is really doing a fantastic job with softball cricket for teams in the capital City and its environs and when I was approached to come on board as a sponsor, I had no hesitation doing so, hence this gesture here today,” said Sunich.
John thanked both Sunich and Managing Director of Goodwood Racing Services Chetram Singh for their timely and tangible contributions towards the successful staging of his entity’s second tournament.
“Not only have they been working with us to ensure our tournament was a success, but they are other sponsors who have been contributing to the success of our tournaments, by giving us their support and I wish to say on behalf of the GSCL, thanks,” said John.
Other sponsors who have been making their contributions are: Memorex Enterprise, Five Star Minerals, Romain Car Wash, Chung’s Global Enterprise, Star Party Rentals, Global Marketing Agency, Chunilall Baboolall, Hopkinson Mining, Dale Scott Gas Station, Mike’s Copy Centre, Elegant Jewellery and Pawn Shop.
There are also King’s Jewellery World, Digimax, Fabulous Homes Realty, Better Value Realty, Aagman Indian Cuisine, the management of Everest Cricket Club and the management and staff of Regal Stationery and Computer Supplies, especially Managing Director Mahendra ‘Anil’ Hardyal, who has been the driving force behind the GSCL Inc.
Meanwhile, the tournament will culminate this weekend at the Everest Cricket Club ground, with the playing of the quarterfinals tomorrow from 0930hrs, with the quarterfinalists being Regal XI and Trophy Stall (Group A), Speedboat and Recharge (Group B), Wolf Warriors and Invaders (Group C) and defending champions Memorex and Universal DVD Titans from Group D.
Tomorrow’s matches pit Wolf Warriors and Universal DVD Titans first, followed by the Memorex versus Invaders matchup, then the Regal XI versus Recharge encounter, before Trophy Stall and Speedboat culminate the day’s events.
For the semifinals which bowl off the following day, the winner of match number one will oppose the winner of match number four in one encounter while the winner of the second and third quarterfinal matches will collide in the other semi-final matchup. The two victorious sides meet in the final later that same day.
As was evident when the GSCL Inc. ran off the first 12/12 tournament in May, which saw Memorex defeat Regal XI to take home the top prize of $600 000 and trophy, following the feats of then Most Valuable Player (MVP) Shimron Hetmyer, the final for the second tournament will be broadcast live via NCN Radio.
