EURIS VIDAL of the Dominican Republic edged Trinidad and Tobago’s Joshua Alexander, in a photo finish, to cop the 30-lap cycling race at the King George V Park, St Clair, when the 10th annual Newsday Cycling Classic and Fun Run took place.
The 25-year-old Vidal got the nod over Alexander, who initially thought he was victorious in a keenly-contested sprint to the finish, but Vidal, representing Team Foundation, was adjudged the winner in 50 minutes 48.01 seconds.
Alexander, of Team Beacon, was second, while another Team Foundation rider, Geron Williams of Guyana, finished in third spot.
Barbadian wheelsman Philip Clarke of Heatwave was fourth, followed by the evergreen Gene ‘Geronimo’ Samuel of Team Trek, Roger Smart of Madonna, Keron Bramble of Sonics and Marc Codrington of Slipstream.
Unfortunately, Jovian Gomez, who led after the penultimate lap, was overtaken by the main bunch and ended low down in the field, which had Antigua and Barbuda’s Tamiko Butler as the lone female rider to complete the race.
The other major event of the day was the Fun Run, over five kilometres, in which a number of athletes tested their mettle in humid conditions.
Kelvin Johnson of Guyana emerged victorious, in a time of 15 minutes 48 seconds, ahead of his fellow countryman Lionel D’Andrade who was 12 seconds slower than Johnson, while Jules La Rode placed third, 12 seconds after D’Andrade.
And, in the women’s category, Thais Gutierrez claimed gold in 20 minutes 59 seconds, with Sara Quellette next in 22 minutes 58 seconds and Jenna Gomes third in 23 minutes 53 seconds.
The proceeds from the Classic and Fun Run will go towards the Newsday Save the Street Children Fund.
