THE Guyana Police Force (GPF), through diligent work, is closer to unearthing a cache of arms and ammunition used by criminal elements, who have been plaguing several businesses within recent times.
This follows the arrest of 17 suspects after Monday’s botched robbery in which gunmen and police exchanged fire, resulting in the killing of a suspect at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
In that same incident, two of the dead man’s three accomplices were apprehended, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud reported.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that, so far, police have established that the same gang, who tried to invade Meten-Meer-Zorg, were linked to the recent robbery/murder of shopkeeper Zulficar Namdar in that village and also robbed Wakenaam businessman Rohan Dhanayshure on September 7.
The Deputy Commissioner (Law Enforcement) said the fourth suspect, who was armed, is still at large but efforts are being made to force him out of hiding.
The police previously reported that, acting on information received that an armed robbery had been planned, they staked out an area at Kastev Housing Scheme, Meten-Meer-Zorg, on September 16.
At about 10:00 hrs, two motor vehicles, bearing number plates HB 7644 and PPP 9366, drove up and four men, two of whom were armed with handguns, exited.
RETURNED FIRE
Ranks challenged the men who fired at them and the police returned fire, fatally wounding Kirk Bacchus, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara.
A 9mm pistol and two live rounds were recovered and two of the other men have been arrested and the motor vehicles seized by the police.
The fourth man, who is armed with a gun, escaped and is being pursued by the police.
However, the diligence and professional efforts by the police, on Monday, did not go unnoticed by residents, who openly commended them for preventing what could have been another armed robbery in their community.
Last week, at a press conference hosted by Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, Acting Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell said the incident in which shop owner Zulficar Namdar was killed appeared to be a “hit”.
The Top Cop explained that the three men arrived firing their guns and Namdar was singled out and executed, although it appeared to be a robbery.
About 20:00 hrs on September 7, businessman Dhanayshure, 40, was shot and injured to his right shoulder during an armed robbery at his Wakenaam Island home.
The police said investigations established that six men with firearms had broken into the house and held up Dhanayshure’s daughter and son-in-law before taking away an undisclosed quantity of jewellery and cash.
The businessman returned home during the heist and was confronted and shot by the men who fled in a speedboat that was docked on the island.
