Grove Police Station reaches out to needy children – over 100 outfitted for school Monday

THE Grove Police Station and its Station Management Committee, under the direction of Sergeant Lorna Adonis, yesterday, embarked on an initiative that benefited almost 300 families on the East Bank of Demerara.

altPolice officers of the station and members of the Station Management Committee yesterday distributed school supplies to children whose parents are finding it difficult to provide the means to send them to school.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday afternoon at the station, Sergeant Lorna Adonis explained that they decided to embark on such a programme since it was realised that many of the children along the East Bank of Demerara were often seen on the road during school hours.
Enquires about their presence at various liming spots and questioning of their parents revealed that they were unable to go to school because of financial constraints. In most cases, many of these children belong to single-parent households, with the mothers being the only parent around.alt
The police at the station used their influence and got the support of members of the business community along the East Bank of Demerara who pooled resources and got the school supplies for the children.
The children, who were presented with school supplies yesterday, come from villages between Grove and Garden of Eden on the East Bank of Demerara.
altAmong the items given out were school bags, pencils, books and other supplies. The items were given to children from nursery to secondary.
Sergeant Adonis could not say if there was a similar activity coordinated by the station in the past but since she has been at the station for eight months, yesterday’s activity was the first such exercise.
She said that the next move on the cards is to assist the pensioners and other senior citizens living between Grove and Garden of Eden areas. Also on hand to witness the exercise yesterday were Senior Police Officer Booker and junior police ranks of the station.
