Plans being mulled to conduct National Economic Forum annually

THE conclusion of the National Economic Forum saw several proposals being put forward, among them the suggestion that it be held annually, particularly in light of continuously evolving economic circumstances.
altThis was highlighted by Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), Ronald Webster, who co-chaired the two – day event at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal.
The PSC head noted that there was total involvement by participants who included business representatives, trade union officials, religious groups, and government and political representatives. He noted that a shift towards the hosting of an annual economic forum would be necessary, so that stakeholders could understand what factors have changed and to seek solutions to address the challenges from a rapidly changing economic climate, locally and internationally.
He lauded the forum, but noted that it was, “Just a start, we are looking ten years down the road….local factors are being influenced, external factors, hence the need to constantly update plans”.
Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds congratulated those who made the event possible, while hinting that those who argue strongly for their ideas must do so in a democratic manner. He noted that stakeholders must, “as Guyanese, want the best for all”.
Delivering the closing remarks, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce (ag), Irfaan Ali, thanked those who participated, including the Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh and the chief executive officers of several companies. The participants contributed substantially to the event’s success, especially those who chaired the break-out sessions which addressed various issues within sectors, Minister Ali noted.
He promised to ensure that a summary of the recommendations and results of the various sessions conducted would be made available to all participants in the near future.
The forum was held from August 14 to 15, to build on the platform established by previously held summits, and to provide a forum for stakeholders to discuss key emerging issues to the nation’s development. The forum’s theme was “Promoting economic growth and development through innovation, diversification and partnership”.
The event featured presentations by President Donald Ramotar, Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, Chairman of the PSC, Ronald Webster and the chairpersons of each of the 10 pre-selected thematic groups comprising technical representatives of the government and political opposition.(GINA)
