GT&T Caribbean Kids Hockey Festival rated a success

WESTERN Union Hikers are the Under-19 champions after getting past St Stanislaus College 6-1 in the final of the inaugural Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) Caribbean Kids Hockey Festival this past Sunday at the National Gymnasium.
The tournament ran from July 31 to August 4 and was an initiative of the GHB, aimed at getting more players involved and exposed to the sport.
Organised by the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) as part of its development programme Guyana took on teams from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago in what was described as a very successful event.
In the U-19 female division which featured only three sides, Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) were crowned champions after crushing Hikers 7-1 and Supermix (a combined team) 8-0 in the first round of the round-robin competition. In the second round of games, GCC drew with Hikers 2-2, but defeated Supermix 6-0.
Hikers finished second in the group as they defeated eventual third-place finishers Supermix by a 3-0 score line in both of their matchups. Marzana Fiedtkou was adjudged MVP of this division.
In the marquee Boys final, Jamarj Assanah opened the scoring for the Hikers in the third minute then doubled his personal tally eight minutes later against Saints.
The lanky midfielder, who was a class above the rest in terms of skills, added another with a neatly taken strike in the 17th minute into lower left-hand corner of the goal then he sealed the deal with the completion of his helmet-trick in the 20th minute.
Leon Bacchus and Aroydy Branford supported the rout with goals in the 12th and 14th minutes respectively. Delmar Ng netted for Saints in the 19th minute. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of this division was adjudged to be Assanah.
Combermere Secondary School ‘C’ were crowned champions of the U-16 Boys division as they defeated Futuristik Tigers out of Trinidad and Tobago 2-1.
In the Girls’ category the U-16 division, Futuristik were crowned champions as they defeated GCC 2-1 in the final. Aaliyah Gordon of GCC was voted MVP.
In the only mixed division of the tournament, Marian Academy were crowned the U-13 champions when they overcame Futuristik 2-0 in the final.
Marian Academy’s Rosario Ramsammy was adjudged the division’s MVP.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, the respective divisional winners, second- and third-place finishers were given trophies and medals while each divisional MVP was given a trophy, all presented by GT&T’s Outside Plant and Maintenance Manager John Marshall.
