LCPL T20 : Pooran hits robust half century but Red Steel go down by 19 runs : ….. Santokie, Permaul star with ball for Amazon Warriors

DESPITE  a belligerent half century from 17 year old Nicholas Pooran, Trinidad and Tobago’s  Red Steel went down to Guyana Amazon Warriors by 19 runs in their Limacol Caribbean Premier League encounter at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence last night. Scores in the match, Guyana Amazon Warriors 155 for 5, Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel 136 for 9.
Asked to bat first, the Amazon Warriors were indebted to their skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan and James Franklyn who saved their team’s innings following a pugnacious start from openers Lendl Simmons and Martin Guptil, by adding 49 for the sixth wicket from 3.4 overs, to give them their final total.
Simmons, who topscored with 42 and Guptil (32) added 74 for the first wicket from 9.1 overs, with Guptil hitting the final delivery of the first over from Miguel Cummins for four, followed by a six off Kevon Cooper and two more fours off Samuel Badree.
Simmons joined the boundary hitting act, when he struck both Cummins and Suleiman Benn for four, followed by a six off Badree, before seeing the demise of Guptil, who was lbw to Badree off the first delivery of the 10th over, having faced 21 deliveries for his 32.
That wicket slowed the home team’s run scoring, as they could only muster 36 from the next eight overs, posting their 100 in the 15th over of their innings, while losing four wickets, namely Simmons, Mohammed Hafeez (14, 1×6), Christopher Barnwell (00) and Narsingh Deonarine (01).
At this stage, Franklyn and Sarwan joined forces and took the attack to the Red Steel, with 21 of their 49 runs coming off the final over that was bowled by Dwayne Bravo, the Red Steel’s skipper, with both batsmen hitting him for six, while Sarwan scooped the final delivery to fine leg for four.
Despite his last over blunder, Dwayne Bravo ended with 2 for 41 for the Red Steel, who got raced to 28 from 5.5 overs, before they lost a dangerous looking Justin Guillen who was bowled by Hafeez for 22, which was decorated with three fours.
When Veerasammy Permaul who ended with 3 for 32, removed both Davy Jacobs (10) and Ross Taylor (02) cheaply, Red Steel were 50 for 3 from 10.1 overs, at which point Pooran joined Darren Bravo and took over the mantle of attempting to steer his team home.
Sixes reigned off his bat at will, as he struck Narine over fine leg for his first maximum, followed by two more off Hafeez, while Darren Bravo chipped in with a sweetly time four through extra cover off Franklyn.
The Amazon Warriors had the opportunity to dismiss Pooran twice in Permaul’s third over, but both Guptil and Sarwan grassed the chances offered off successive deliveries, following which the batsmen said thanks by hitting Permaul back over his head for six.
However, the Amazon Warriors removed Darren Bravo, who got a thin edge through to Denesh Ramdin off Santokie and it was followed by a marvelous catch by Barnwell at long off to account for Dwayne Bravo (08), leaving the Red Steel on 105 for 5.
Those dismissals did not fazed Pooran, who struck two more sixes off Permaul, realizing the lone half century of the contest with the second six, having faced 23 deliveries to get there before he was caught by Hafeez at long on, in his attempt to hit Permaul for his seventh six.
His dismissal brought an end to the visitor’s run chase, as Santokie struck twice in his final over, removing Cooper via the run out route at the non-striker’s end, while he bowled O’Brien with his next delivery.
With the Red Steel needing 21 from the final over that was bowled by Narine, they lost Benn, bowled off the second delivery, while Cummins blocked the other four to ensure his side was not bowled out, as Santokie (2 for 20) and Narine (2 for 29) supported Permaul with the ball.
Santokie was named man- of- the match, while Pooran received the prize for hitting the most sixes in the contest, at the brief presentation ceremony that followed and while the Red Steel will head to Barbados to face the Tridents in their next encounter on Saturday, the Amazon Warriors will engage the Jamaica Tallawahs at the same venue tomorrow night.
