Man killed, another hospitalised under Guard : …after Mandela shooting incident

Police are investigating the death of Elvis Fernandes, 24, of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who was killed Friday in a shooting incident on Mandela Avenue that left another man hospitalised under police guard.

According to initial investigations, about 18:45 hours last Friday, the driver of a mini-bus and the driver of a motor car had an argument earlier on Mandela Avenue over an accident involving the two vehicles.

The drivers of the two vehicles later crossed paths again along Mandela Avenue as the mini-bus stopped to put off a passenger and another argument erupted. On this occasion Fernandes and a plain clothes policeman were in the motor car.

According to reports, Fernandes became involved in the argument along with the driver of the motor car during which he was allegedly shot to his chest by a man who was a passenger in the mini-bus.

The policeman responded to the situation and reportedly discharged a round from his service firearm which struck the armed man.

The armed man, however, re-entered the mini-bus and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by the driver. He has been identified as Lloyd Britton, 20, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, and has been admitted a patient under guard at the hospital. Fernandes was pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital. (Michel Outridge)
