Boxers ink contracts for 29th edition of GBBC’s Fight Nights

Boxers appearing on the 29th edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) card slated for August 3 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Friday inked their contracts at the office of Abdool and Abdool  Insurance Company, High Street Georgetown.

Those present were Clive Atwell who will take on Barbados based Guyanese Shurwyne Marshall in a eight-round lightweight contest, Former European Middleweight champion Howard `The battersea Bomber’ who will be coming up against mark Austin in a junior middleweight contest (Austin was also present), Richard Williamson and Anson Green who faces each other in a four-round lightweight contest and Laured Stewart who will match gloves with Eversley Brown in another four-round fight.
Apart from the four professional fights, there will also be four amateur bouts on the card ,but to date the names of the boxers have not been released. This will be done during next week after the GABA executives meet.
The GBBC will be using this card in an effort to attract crowd support not only for this card but for upcoming cards.
Over the years, professional boxing has seen very low spectator turnout and this is of much concern to the GBBC executive.
It has been reported in another section of the media that the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) has made a decision to incorporate amateur boxers into the 2014 Rio (Brazil) Olympics, however GBBC’s president Peter Abdool refuses to balk and continues to agitate for qualitative activity for local boxers.
Yesterday’s signing of the contact was witnessed by GBBC’s treasurer Clairmont DeSouza along with media operatives.
DeSouza informed that on the night of the card which gets underway from 29:00 hrs, Banks DIH Limited will do promotional novelties and boxing fans will have a chance to win a number of different prizes.
DeSouza said the Boxing Board is currently trying to get the West Indian as well as the international cricketers that will be in Guyana for the Caribbean Premier League to witness the card.
Asked what his chances are against Eastman, Austin simply said “Eastman is a very good fighter, but I will go out there and do my best.
In response, Eastman admitted that he is getting old “ and I do not know how strong my chin is, so I cannot take Mark lightly, he is an up and coming fighter—he’s a cagey fighter and I will take him seriously , I cannot afford to blink because he is a heavy puncher”.
Atwell who returned home just about a week ago from the Dominican Republic where he trains frequently said he has been surfing the web to get facts on his Barbados opponent Shurwyne Marshall but has been unable to get any information so far.
Atwell  who  recently knocked out Barbados based Revlon Lake, said he knows Marshall has been around for a while but he (Atwell) will take him (Marshall) and any stumbling block in his path to prove himself up there.
The World Boxing Council’s number eight lightweight fighter said he is always working out mentally and physically and since he returned home he has been going through his paces with his former amateur coach Lennox Daniels.
“I was known for my speed which takes away the power in the punch so together with Daniels, we are working on power”.
Williamson who was injured during his last fight said he will go into the ring come fight night and do his best.
Green for his lightweight contest against Williamson said he threw off 16 pounds since his last bout but is feeling strong “and I don’t think that will be a disadvantage for me”.
