Erosion protection works for the overpass on the Moruca River linking Kumaka and San Jose, all in Region 1 (Barima/Waini), will begin next Monday.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government Mr. Collin Croal said the contractors for the revetment works valued at $15M have the necessary equipment and materials on location and are doing preparatory work.
“The contractor is awaiting the completion of Moruca Expo to be held at Santa Rosa on Friday and Saturday this week to avoid disrupting this activity. The work begins in earnest on Monday after the Expo will have been concluded,” he said.
The revetment is necessary because after prolonged rainfall and a high tide, floodwater usually covers a part of the approach to the overpass, forcing residents to walk on the edge of the old revetment, an unsafe undertaking.
Vehicles have had to cease movement in the direction of the flooded area.
The San Jose and Kumaka communities have a population in excess of 3,000 and users of the bridge include an additional 2,000 passing through en route to the other two sub-regions, Charity, the Essequibo Coast and Georgetown.
Mr. Croal also disclosed that rehabilitation and corrective work on the overpass itself will begin as soon as the erosion-prevention works are completed.
