TODAY (July 11) is the deadline set by management of the Guyana National Stadium, for the immediate removal of all materials, assets and encumbrances that are currently lodged in the large open space (park and walk area) between it and the Princess International Hotel, at Providence, East Bank Demerara.
The ‘Notice to Remove’, published over the past few days in this newspaper, explained that it is to allow the location to be used for additional parking during the upcoming one-day cricket matches between the West Indies and Pakistan teams on July 14 and 16.
“Failure to remove by July 11, 2013 will result in seizure of materials and assets,” the publication had warned.
Managing Director of the Stadium, Mr. Anthony Xavier told the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, that the owners and operators of the trucks and haulers parked on the specified lot have been cooperating fully.
He pointed out that, in view of the long waiting time and the number of trucks to be processed for scanning by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) facility, the vehicles are there, temporarily, to avoid blocking the traffic outside the La Penitence, Georgetown scanner.
AWAITING INSTRUCTIONS
At the place reserved for stadium parking, a number of trucks and haulers were there, yesterday, awaiting instructions from the shipping brokers and agents to proceed to be scanned.
The operators all claimed that Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Mr. Robert Persaud had given them temporary permission to park there since some of the vehicles were, at that time, using the same place for interior transportation transhipment.
One of the truck owners, who was present when this newspaper visited the site yesterday, indicated that the area was identified for interior truckers to temporarily interchange their goods from the supplier, because they first commenced operations in Hadfield Street, Stabroek where increased activities had caused road blocking.
He said, as Guyanese and cricket lovers, they are prepared to cease their daily activities and stay away from the area to allow the stadium management to fulfil its obligation as host of the games. (Mark Bradford)
