Accused teenage jewellery robber denied bail

TEENAGER Basil Jew, of Lot 59 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was refused bail on two charges yesterday, when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

He pleaded not guilty to both offences, particulars of which alleged that on Sunday July 7, together with others in Georgetown, he robbed Leshana Mc Curdy of one pair gold earrings and one gold chain, valued a total of $30,000 and, after robbing her, used personal violence against the 17-year-old.
Police Sergeant Burgette Grant, prosecuting, successfully objected to pre-trial freedom for Jew, pointing out that the virtual complainant was walking, peacefully down the street when she was pounced upon by the defendant and his accomplices.
The prosecutor added that, if Jew secured the grant, he would not return to court and, most likely, commit more similar offences.
He has to be back in court on July 24.
