A BELLIGERENTÂ unbeaten ton from Brian Sattaur, coupled with a menacing spell of fast bowling from Cordell Mars, helped Demerara defeat defending champions Berbice by 84 runs at the Everest Cricket Club ground, to take the Guyana Cricket Board/GTM Under-19 Inter-county limited overs title yesterday. Scores in the match were Demerara 203 for 6 off 42 overs, Berbice 119 all out off 29.1 overs. The pugnacious Sattaur, who was dropped on 0 and 99 by Shailendra Shameer and Ashkay Homraj respectively, struck 9 sixes and four fours in his unbeaten 113 which together with Kamesh Yadram (25), Dexter George (21) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul 20, powered Demerara to 203 for 6 from their 42 overs.
Berbice in reply, failed to negotiate the pace of Mars who took 5 for 39, which together with Dexter George’s 2 for 18 saw them crumble for 119 off 29.1 overs, despite Shameer’s resilient 26, Kevon Jahawir 16 and Parmanand Narine’s 15.
A heavy drizzle, coupled with the unavailability of balls before the toss was spun, saw a delay in the contest which was reduced to a 42 overs affair and saw Berbice win the toss and ask their opponents, who took the three-day title from them just under a week ago, to take first strike.
That move would have paid dividends, had Shameer who was stationed at point not grassed an easy chance offered by Sattaur off the fourth delivery of Demerara’s innings, sent down by Romario Shepherd.
The left-handed opener said thanks by belting the next two deliveries to the boundary for fours and following a sedate start from Chanderpaul – his opening partner – the pair tore into the Berbicians, with Sattaur hitting boundaries at will.
Both Suresh Dhanai and Sharaz Ramcharran were struck for sixes by Sattaur, with the six off Dhanai forcing the umpires to change the ball, while Chanderpaul, who took 23 deliveries to open his account, cut loose with back-to-back fours off Dhanai.
Despite the boundary flow from Sattaur’s bat, which also included a six and four over extra cover off Shameer, Demerara posted their first 50 inside 18 overs, a strong testament to the disciplined bowling by the Ancient County lads.
Sattaur lost Chanderpaul at 75 for 1 in the 22nd over, when the left-handed first class opener was caught by Kevon Jahawir off Shawn Pereira (2 for 32), but not before he (Sattaur) had posted his first 50 and the second of the tournament from 69 deliveries with four fours and three sixes.
The quick demise of Kemol Savory (2) who was caught at the wicket by Homraj off Pereira brought Yadram to the wicket with whom Sattaur added 79 for the third wicket from 15.3 overs as he motored along the scoring for his team.
At one point during the partnership, Sattaur faced nine deliveries, five of which flew over the boundary ropes, with two of his sixes coming in one over from Deryck Narine and the other three in the following over that was bowled by Shameer, as he raced into the 90s.
After spending seven scoreless deliveries on 99 and witnessing the demise of Yadram, who was caught at deep midwicket by Ramcharran off David Latchaya for 25 (33 balls, 4×4), Sattaur watched as Homraj grassed a low chance off Kevon Jahawir.
