GUYANA suffered its third straight loss by 23 runs when they faced Leeward Islands yesterday in Round three of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under- 17 cricket competition.
The match which was played at the Louis D’ or ground was a crucial game for both teams as they entered the third round with two defeats. (Scores: Leewards 212 for 9 from their 50 overs, Guyana 189 all out.
However, Guyana who evidently has a weak battling line up failed to capitalise on a number of good opportunities that the Leeward Islands had presented to them.
The Leeward Islands began the match slowly due to some tight bowling from Guyana, however, with several glitches in the field and some inconsistent bowling the Leeward Islands made a decent but formidable 212 for the loss of nine wickets.
Bowling for Guyana Bandon Persaud grabbed three wickets.
In reply the Guyanese batsmen found the going very tough and began losing wickets at regular intervals of the game.
However, Kemo Paul who had fell cheaply in the first two matches made an attractive half century.
Supporting Paul very well was Keaunu Harry with a well played 35 as Guyana were all out for 189 . The 53 made by Paul is the first half-century for any Guyanese batsman in this year’s competition.
However, despite his almost single handed effort of trying to get the runs, Leeward Islands prevailed by 23 runs. This result is the closest for Guyana who were soundly beaten in their two previous games.
And with already three defeats it is evident that Guyana chances of winning this year’s title is a dream that is unlikely to materialise. The Guyanese now sit at the bottom of the points table.
