T&T’s Nero and Ramirez win CARICOM 10k : …Guyana’s Cleveland Forde dethroned

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad,  (CMC) – Tonya Nero of Trinidad and Tobago retained her title and the Secretary-General’s Trophy at the CARICOM 10k run in her homeland on Saturday. Nero had captured the title last year in St Lucia and repeated with a time of 37 minutes 22 seconds watched by a small gathering including CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.
Her compatriot Denzil Ramirez claimed the men’s crown and the CARICOM Chairman’s Trophy in a time of 32 minutes 9 seconds as 70 athletes from eight (8) Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) contested the event around the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. Ramirez dethroned last year’s champion Cleveland Forde of Guyana who was second ahead of Richard Jones and Curtis Cox of Trinidad and Tobago with Kelvin Johnson of Guyana in fifth place.
Chasing Nero home among the ladies at this 9th edition of the event was Alika Morgan of Guyana (41.46) who was followed by Kenisha Pascal of Grenada (43.06) with Linda McDowell of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Arieta Martin of Jamaica filling the other top places.
In a brief address to the athletes, coaches, officials and fans including President of the National Amateur Athletics Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr Ephraim Serrette, Secretary-General LaRocque commended the participants and noted that people of all ages took part. He said the discipline and dedication needed to compete in such an event if translated into our daily lives could only be of benefit to society as a whole.
The CARICOM 10k is the first activity as Trinidad and Tobago prepares to host the 34th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM which begins with an Opening Ceremony at the Diplomatic Centre, Port of Spain on July 3.
