14th Annual Castrol Father’s Day 50 miler – Jeffrey blitz field to take senior title ….Shaw retains Veteran’s crown

BRILLIANT riding from 19 year- old Raynauth Jeffrey, saw the Team Coco (Guyana) cyclist blistering the field to take the top podium spot in 14th Annual Castrol sponsored Father’s

Day 50 mile cycle road race, yesterday morning, in a alttime of 1h. 55mins: 31secs.
Miami based Shane Budhram, Warren ‘40’ McKay, Junior Niles, and two junior riders in Shaquille Agard and Mark Harris, completed the top six paying positions in an event which attracted 52 starters, including three females.

As the peloton which included the top six along with defending champion Orville Hinds, Robin Persaud, Christopher Holder, Jude Bentley, Walter Grant-Stuart, Christopher Persaud, Michael Anthony, Paul DeNobrega and Godfrey Pollydore, just to name a few, approached the village of Nimes on the upward journey, Hinds and Jeffrey made a solo move to the front.
Hinds took the first of eight sprint prizes that were up for grabs as they entered the village of Plantain Walk, as he worked in tandem with Jeffrey opening a lead of over 90 seconds on the peloton, which had left a tired looking Grant-Stuart and three other cyclists at the back.
Bentley, Budhram and McKay decided they had enough of the peloton and made their move to the front, holding a lead of 300 metres, while they tried desperately to reduce the gap between themselves and the front duo of Hinds and Jeffrey.
As they approached Leonora, Hinds suffered a puncture to his front wheel and with his team bus nowhere in sight was forced to give up his right to defend his title, leaving Jeffrey as the lone rider at the front.
He enjoyed his sojourn, all the way to the turn back point at Bushy Park, Parika, and even on the downward journey displayed a relaxed mode on his face as he passed Bentley, McKay and Budhram, who were yet to receive their instructions to turn back from Race Marshal Malcolm Sonaram.
Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club’s Robin Persaud, who had placed himself in a good position to challenge the chasing trio, suffered a double blow out at Zeeburg on his way up and was forced to call it a day in the saddle, while Bentley suffered an attack of cramps and was dropped by McKay and Budhram.
At the top of the race, a relaxed looking Jeffrey calmly crossed the finish line at the Demerara Harbour Bridge all by himself to take the title along with the remaining seven sprint prizes, while McKay showed no attempts to resist Budhram’s drive for the finish line, choosing rather to relax in the third position.
Hazina Bharrat copped the top prize in the Ladies category over Naomi Singh and Pelham Doris, Clyde Jacobs surprised Lennox Dick and Ozia MacAulay to take the Upright category, Talim Shaw retrieved the Veterans’ title from Dennis Boyd and Kennard Lovell and Agard the Junior category over Harris and Mario King, respectively.
Foreman of the Mechanic Department within the Guyana Oil Company, the distributors of Castrol lubricants , Junior Rampersaud  assisted with the distribution of prizes at the end of the event, with Monty Parris receiving a Special prize after being named the lone Over-60 competitor to finish the event.
