Marijuana trafficker gets three years imprisonment, fined $7.2M

A CONVICTED drug trafficker was fined $7.2M and sentenced to three years imprisonment on Monday.
Wayne Lindie, 37, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, Berbice, was found guilty of having eight kilogrammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
He stood motionless in the courtroom as the sentence was passed on him at New Amsterdam Court. His lawyer, Mr. Ryan Crawford prior to giving notice of appeal, said the prisoner is the sole breadwinner of his family.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, who imposed the penalty, said it represented three times the street value of the narcotic.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, led evidence from two witnesses who testified that, on February 11, 2013, Cadet Officer Singh was in vehicle PPP 4934 when he observed Lindie carrying a black bag in his left hand walking North on the Tannery Dam, Savannah Park.
Lindie was pursued and the bag, when opened, contained nine sealed packets of leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
In his defence, the convict said he had dropped his daughter at the School of Nations and was proceeding to his sister’s home nearby to awaiting the dismissal of classes when police called out to him.             
He said, after he responded, the Police picked up a bag that was near and accused him of having it in his possession.
