Former Appeal Court Judge Ramson now – Information Commissioner

FORMER Justice of Appeal, Senior Counsel Charles R. Ramson has been appointed Commissioner of Information, Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon announced yesterday.

He said the appointment was made by President Donald Ramotar under the Access to Information Act 2011 and confers upon the appointee powers to enforce the provisions.
Specifically, the Commissioner has powers to provide access to information if so required and to publish what is in the possession and control of public authorities.
Luncheon, speaking at his usual post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, said the Information Commissioner’s office would be located in that very building.
“The Commissioner of Information, under the Act, has considerable powers, the power to ensure disclosure. Guyanese would be told, through the media, that this information is available, available for access by members of the public. The Commissioner would be advising Guyanese how that is to be done,” the HPS said.
Apart from being a retired Appellate Court Judge,
Mr. Ramson had also, previously, held the post of Attorney General.
