Suspect in Corporal Cleto murder for court tomorrow

THE suspected triggerman in the shooting death of Corporal Romain Cleto will be arraigned in court tomorrow to answer a charge of murder. The Guyana Chronicle was told that, based on eyewitness description of the suspect, police investigators are very confident they have nabbed the man responsible for the corporal’s death. Crime Chief Seelall Persaud informed the media last Friday that a suspect is likely to appear in court on Monday as police investigations continue.

A source close to the investigation told this newspaper that the suspect’s arraignment tomorrow is likely to have a chain effect, with several other persons being brought to the court as the investigations continue and more names become available in respect to those involved in whatever way in the death of the cop.

When Corporal Cleto was gunned down on Avenue of the Republic earlier this month, the police vowed to do everything possible to bring the killers to justice. Hours after the shooting, the police had detained several persons for questioning in the matter, with some being detained for longer periods of time than others. Shortly thereafter, a senior police official had mentioned that, based on eyewitnesses’ description of the shooting on the dreadful night, the police had a suspect. The GPF had also moved to cull a few phone records in hope of creating linkage between their suspect and the bigger boss the men were believed to have been working for. It is unclear how at what stage the police are at in the process of obtaining the phone records.

On the night Corporal Cleto was shot, two other police ranks were injured and had to be hospitalized. The police later confirmed earlier information published by this newspaper that the car the gunman exited was heading to carry out a hit on a group of persons gathered at a city bar when it was intercepted by the police.

The surviving ranks of the patrol told investigators that they were trailing a white Toyota Vios motorcar after suspecting its number plate to be a fake. Hours after the shooting, an eyewitness described the gunman to this publication as “fearless” and “skinny”.
