AS THE world observes World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2013, under the theme “ICTs and Improving Road Safety,” GT&T has signalled its support for safe road use with the donation of a quantity of BlueTooth ear pieces to the National Road Safety Council and the Guyana Public Transportation Association.

Ms. Ramona Doergen, Coordinator, National Road Safety Council, and Mr. Vibert Belle, President (ag.) Guyana Public Transportation Association both expressed gratitude for the devices pointing out that they will certainly contribute to safer road use practices.
GT&T, which has been supporting the work of the National Road Safety Council in Guyana over the years, said it continues to fully endorse safe road use and the “Don’t Text and Drive” campaign.
To this end, the company, a few years ago, dedicated one of its local phone cards in support of this campaign. The phone card remains active to date.
According to UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, nearly 1.3 million people die in road accidents every year.
“They leave millions more injured or permanently disabled, placing a heavy economic burden on families and countries. The United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety from 2011 to 2020 is dedicated to helping to make roads and vehicles safer worldwide.
“Information and communication technologies provide many options. Intelligent transport systems and navigation devices can help reduce congestion.”
GT&T endorses hands-free communications which would contribute to fewer accidents, especially among young people who account for a significant amount of road deaths.
GT&T calls on all road users to avoid using their mobile phones when driving or to utilise hands free devices.
