THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has dubbed as “baseless” the report that the city constabulary has been engaging in the racial profiling, harassing of Guyanese East Indians.

altA press release issued by  M&CC  Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr. Royston King noted that within recent times, certain sections of the media have been suggesting that the council, through its constabulary, has been engaged in racial profiling, harassing Guyanese East Indians.
He was indirectly referring to the article, ‘Radio/TV personality Ossie Rodgers pickets City Hall for racial profiling of East Indian friends’ in the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, highlighting   the one-man protest outside  City Hall on Wednesday.
The PRO declared that this is utterly absurd and very baseless.
He explained that this report stemmed from an incident that occurred Friday last whereby three men were cautioned and arrested for depositing waste on the Council’s parapet.
According to King, the men were imbibing alcohol and depositing the bottles on the reserve.
He noted that during the process of their arrest and immediately after no one made any formal complaint about racial profiling. As a matter of fact, the council has never received any formal report from anyone about racial profiling.
King said that thus is unprecedented and the matter is before the courts.
According to the release, over the years, the constabulary has been doing its work to enforce compliance with the by-laws of the city.  Admittedly, the release added, it is short on resources but the M&CC has been doing its best in very harsh working conditions.
However, to suggest that its members have been involved in racial profiling is baseless, and the council therefore rejects this suggestion and appeals to all citizens to adhere to the by-laws of the City of Georgetown, the release concluded.
