Johanna Cecelia Secondary student suffers eye damage …from punch thrown by schoolmate

THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Grade 7 student, Nicholas Munroe, of Johanna Cecelia Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast had to be rushed to the Suddie Hospital Monday morning, after he was punched in the stomach and right eye by a fourth former.
Ms. Shelly Munroe, mother of the

injured student, said that she works at the school as a security guard and while on duty Monday morning she was proceeding down a stairway in the building when a student suddenly ran past her using indecent language. The guard said she asked the student why he was using such language in a learning institution but he did not answer.
The guard said as she came out of the building she saw a teacher holding up her son Nicholas who was bleeding from his right eye. The guard said the teacher asked her to carry her son to the pipe and wash his face from the blood and she did. The mother said her son was crying out in pain and she rushed him to the Suddie Hospital where he was treated and referred to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre on the East Bank of Demerara for further treatment.
Ms. Munroe who lives at Onderneeming Housing Scheme said the school assisted her with $10,000 to travel to Georgetown.
According to reports, the fourth former who is the bigger student is said to be a bully at the school.  He allegedly interfered with Nicholas during assembly Monday morning and was spoken to by the boy’s sister who told him to stop interfering with her brother. However, after the assembly he reportedly punched the Grade 7 student in his stomach, causing him to fall to the ground, and then he hit him in the right eye and ran upstairs to his classroom using indecent language.

Meanwhile, headmistress of the school, Ms. Joan Forrester in a comment to the press said she was at a Head Teachers Meeting when the incident occurred. She stated, further, that the school is currently investigating the matter while officers of the Schools Welfare Department are also conducting investigations.
