THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has condemned the joint parliamentary Opposition for using their one seat majority in the National Assembly to cut every cent that the Government has budgeted for the construction of an ultra-modern specialty hospital at Liliendall, East Coast Demerara. This hospital, the PPP said, was intended to “provide the best available health care in the world to Guyanese of all walks of life at an affordable cost”.
The PPP said it remains firm that the right to proper health care is recognised, the world over, as a basic human right which every State is enjoined to guarantee its citizens.
“Guyanese have been denied this right by their own political representatives. All over the world, political oppositions are pressuring governments to provide more of these facilities. In Guyana, the political Opposition is preventing the Government from providing even one of such facility.”
According to the ruling party, “This is a human rights tragedy of inexplicable proportions”.
It said the situation is compounded when one considers that the AFC leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, who moved the Motion to effect the cut, is the legal representative of one of the contractors who unsuccessfully tendered for the construction of this facility.
“The gravity of this conflict of interest which contaminates the AFC position on this issue makes it incestuous. This is a replica of their position in respect of the Marriott hotel which they opposed to protect the vested interest of their party’s financier, the Pegasus hotel,” the PPP contended.
The PPP also accused the AFC and APNU of continuing to use their votes in the National Assembly to pursue political, personal and vested interests over and above the people’s welfare and the national interest.
“From all indications, they intend to cut budgetary allocations for a number of other projects all of which are intended to exclusively benefit the citizens of this country. However, the denial of high quality health care to the Guyanese people remains the most cruel blow of them all,” the PPP said.
“This is no longer about politics. This is about life itself. As the opposition cuts, our people and our nation bleed,” the PPP declared.
“To every Guyanese we say, raise your voice in objection. Silence may be a fatal option,” the PPP urged.
