PREPARATIONS for the NACRA Senior Men’s 15s Caribbean Championships, scheduled for May 18 commenced yesterday at the National Park Rugby Playfield. A training squad of 43 players was selected last Saturday following a 15s match at the Playfield between The President’s XV and the Vice-President’s where the latter prevailed 17-12.
Scoring for the Vice President’s XV were T. Henry, T. Braithwaite, K. Campbell while Henry also had a conversion. For the President’s XV, E. Chase and K. Joseph scored a try each with a conversion by L. Greaves.
The President of the GRFU, Peter Green, also addressed the players after the game. He stated that he wanted to ensure that he is serving a very useful term and that the players have to realise that they are Guyanese first and foremost, playing for their country, team and then themselves.
He noted that Rugby has fallen behind and his mission is to push Rugby back into the spotlight. He told the players that they have to use a combination of their skills and knowledge to play the game and the coaches and team members must function as a unit and communicate with one another.
Meanwhile, those short-listed will be involved in a Rugby Skills Fitness Training Programme every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 16:30hrs. The squad will be reduced to 22 players as training continues.
