A SUSPECT in an armed robbery was shot and killed on the spot yesterday at New Amsterdam, Berbice, after he resisted arrest and charged towards a senior police officer with a machete and a knife, despite being cautioned to desist.
Dead is Marlon Shepherd, 29, also called ‘Critters’ of Smythfield, New Amsterdam. He was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead on arrival at the New
Amsterdam Hospital.
A police release said that around 01:00 hr yesterday, an Assistant Superintendent of Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at Matthew Allen and Strand Roads, New Amsterdam. The suspect, who was riding a bicycle, was pointed out to the police by the victim.
The man was pursued by the police officer who caught up with him at Republic Road and Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam and made attempts to arrest him. However, in the process the suspect fearlessly attacked the policeman with the machete and a knife, and ignored the officer’s warning to drop the weapons.
The release said the officer was forced to resort to the use of force and the man was shot to his chest. The man was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said that Shepherd at the time of his death was before the courts on a charge of robbery under arms. The charge was instituted following a report that he had attacked Daryl Edwards, 18, of Tucberg Park, New Amsterdam on February 12 last, while being armed with a cutlass at Garrison Road, New Amsterdam. In the process he robbed the victim of his cell phone and jewellery.
Police investigations are in progress.
