Manickchand announces… : NGSA results being released earlier this year

MINISTER of Education, Ms. Priya Manickchand said, yesterday, that this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) Examination results will be released earlier than it has ever been  before. She made the disclosure in a media interview, pointing out that this earlier than previously release is a part of the improvement of the Ministry’s system.
However, while it will be done earlier than usual this year, the Ministry is also looking at further improving the process  next year, which may include the introduction of machine marking of the examination papers, Manickchand indicated.
She said the marking of the 2013 examination papers has already begun and is on track.
Approximately 17,000 primary school pupils countrywide sat sat the NGSA tests on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26,  with English Language and Integrated Science taken Monday and  Mathematics and Social Studies Tuesday.
The education system has, over the past five years, been undergoing continuous reform, part of which resulted in the Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination (SSEE), called Common Entrance Examination, no longer being used to award places in secondary schools.
Instead, primary level pupils now undergo Grades Two, Four and Six assessments to gain placement in secondary schools.
Guyana has been ranked among the highest developing countries in the Education Index of the United Nations Human Development Report.
The provision of inclusive access to free education from nursery through secondary stages is a major reason for this country’s literacy rate being estimated at 96 percent, one of the best in the Western Hemisphere.
