Rohee challenges CPGs towards strong, effective leadership

MINISTER of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee has underscored the need for strong and effective leadership of the Community Policing Groups (CPG) amidst challenges and achievements.

altHe issued the charge as the organisation elected new leaders at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Sunday at Police Sports Club, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
Rohee acknowledged government’s recognition of the work of CPG members for volunteering their services to national safety as the main objectives were outlined.
He alluded to the dynamic nature of the security sector and reminded CPG members that they come under public scrutiny in the same way as members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
In this regard, Rohee urged the national body to lead the organisation with a greater sense of dynamism and responsibility.
He lamented that, in the past, there have been instances of poor supervision at the divisional and group levels and said that situation has to be corrected.
“Community policing must be seen as part of the overall architecture of public safety,” the minister declared.
Countrywide there are 252 CPGs registered with some 4,000 active members.
The meeting was told that, during 2012, a total of 30,345 patrols were conducted by the membership of CPGs throughout Guyana, resulting in numerous arrests.
The community policing system is celebrating 37 years of existence this year.
