MURDER accused George Gulliver, called ‘Papa George’, 63, and Lloyd David, called ‘Food Face’, yesterday appeared at the Demerara Assizes and pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
Presiding Judge, Justice Brassington Reynolds who has gone on leave and would not be returning to the Bench before April 30th has ordered a probation report on the accused to be presented to him on April 30th. On that day he would entertain pleas in mitigation before passing sentence.
Prosecutor Diana Kaulesar narrated the facts of the case in relation to Gulliver while Attorney-at-law Natasha Backer referred to the facts regarding David.
It was pointed out that in relation to Gulliver called ‘Papa George’ the facts revealed that witnesses said that on the 30th May, 2009 they saw him on the back of his reputed wife Ali cuffing her behind her neck.
It is said that the woman who could not walk after the drubbing was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she died from a fractured spine.
It is said that the accused gave a caution statement alleging that he and his reputed wife had an argument when she squeezed his testicles causing him to cuff her.
Justice Reynolds ordered a probation report on the accused and fixed the date for sentencing on April 30th.
Meanwhile, murder accused David represented by Attorney-at-Law Oneka Archer, assigned by the State, pleaded guilty to the lesser count for unlawfully killing Joseph Pyncandy on the 27th of December, 2009.
Narrating the facts of the case, Backer said that the accused was 45-years-old. It is said that he was at the Bourda Market when Pyncandy, now deceased, asked him to remove. One witness said that she heard something like a person receiving a blow. She then looked on the ground where she saw the deceased lying and standing over him with a piece of iron was the accused.
The judge fixed April 30th for a probation report to be submitted before sentencing.
