AAG Awards Ceremony : Sport Minister calls for collaborative effort

MINISTER of Sport Dr Frank Anthony called on sports administrators and athletes to work collaboratively with the government and his ministry in an effort to develop their respective sport disciplines.Dr Anthony was at the time delivering the feature address at the Athletic Association of Guyana’s (AAG) Annual Awards Ceremony which was held at the Thomas Lands YMCA, on Friday evening.
The Minister congratulated the newly installed executive of the AAG as well as the recipients of awards.
Dr Anthony in his address said he would like to see a partnership develop between his ministry, the government and the AAG so that track and field could move forward. “We have to work collaboratively with ourselves and athletes,” Minister Anthony stressed.
Dr. Anthony pointed out that in another few months Guyana will have its first sysntet6ic athletic track, and that there are no foreign investors on board with the facility’s construction.
According to the Minister, 40 acres of the facility have already been developed with a further 20 acres under construction. And this will be co0mpleted in another few months.
“But some people think it’s taking too long, but they have to realise the facility will not just cater for track and field but it will have a football field,” the Minister explained.
He informed that the synthetic track is at its second-to-last level of construction and emphasised that with the completion of the facility, “our athletes will do better regionally and internationally.
“It is a very substantial investment and Government is confident that track and field will bring us medals,” the Minister stated.
He boasted that when completed, the facility will be on par with any such facility in the Caribbean.
He stressed the fact that if there is no proper approach to the construction of the facility “then all the finances spent on it will go to waste”.
Dr Anthony called on the AAG to outline its plan for the next five years, suggesting that the AAG and his ministry adopt Canada’s Athletes Long Term Development Programme. He said some countries are willing to help in this regard.
“We have also been offered scholarships in Physical Education, and sports today is not something you do by accident, you have to embrace sources.” Dr Anthony stressed.
He also emphasized the fact that if the government is not involved in sports there would not be the construction of the facility that is currently underway.
In closing, Dr Anthony remarked, “At the end of the day, when we work collaboratively, we will go ahead.”
“The world is not waiting on us, the world is going ahead,” he continued.
