A few comments on some Guyana news. It is nonsense for the opposition to punish the entire nation because they have what looks like an irrational dislike for Mr. Rohee.
If he is blamed for not doing anything to improve security, why vote against legislation that would do just that? What happens if another member places the same legislation in parliament? If they vote for it, then the removal of Mr. Rohee is more important than people’s security, a vote against the legislation would mean that they are not really interested in security but only in projecting their power. Regardless of the competency of Mr. Rohee, what is to prevent the opposition from doing the same thing to other ministers or the President himself? Their actions may make it impossible for the government to remove Mr. Rohee, and start a scary precedent.
The President’s call for action against drug dealers is more than welcomed. This was long overdue;concrete steps should have been taken to bring together various agencies and to use as many tactical and legislative tools available to attack this problem at all levels.
The use of the GRA as well as better tactical methods by the GPF using undercover and sting operations should have yielded far better results. Letter writers claim that everyone, including the police know where the dealers are. Without an adequate plan that includes intelligence, investigations, prosecution and imprisonment with supporting court systems and laws, no substantial progress will be made. Like any project, the success usually lies with the proper oversight and will.
