20th edition of Mayor’s Cup tournament officially launched … Action kicks off on Friday at the Den Amstel ground

TWENTY teams, drawn from across Guyana, on Friday, March 16, will begin to battle in the 20th edition of the annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament which fetches a winners’ purse of $1M.

At the Den Amstel ground, Uitvlugt will collide with Police in the opening encounter from 18:30hrs while the second game brings together Bakewell Buxton Stars and Santos.
At a simple ceremony held in the chambers of Mayor Hamilton Green yesterday, several of the participating teams gathered along with members of the media. The long-standing servant of the City of Georgetown said he was happy that the best teams in Guyana will be taking part in the tournament and at the end of the competition, it will be the best Mayor’s Cup tournament.
The tournament also marks the second major tournament for the newly formed Slingerz Football Club who, if victorious over Northern Rangers on Sunday, March 17, can set up a clash with Alpha United.
The runner-up team and second-placers will pocket $500 000 and $300 000 respectively while fourth-place finishers will go home with $200 000.
According to tournament organiser Lennox Arthur, they are a few inducements for top performers but they are “still waiting on the confirmation from a few sponsors. But yes, there will be some prizes for MVP and other incentives for the players”.
Den Amstel Community, BV Community Centre and the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) grounds are the venues for the championship that concludes on March 31.
