Chairman of the Enmore/Hope Neighbourhood Democratic Council, (NDC) Jainath Bhikhari, has stoutly refuted claims made in yesterday’s issue of Kaieteur News that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council(NDC) had sold the Logwood playground to a private contractor, who is now parking his heavy machinery on the ground. The article appearing on page 18 of the newspaper claims that: “The Logwood Enmore playfield has been taken over by heavy machinery owned by the contractor, and a fence has been constructed to protect them.” The article went on to say: “Kaieteur News understands that the contractor is claiming that he bought the land from the Enmore Neighbourhood Democratic Council.”
However, Chairman Bhikhari is adamant that such a claim is a ‘blatant lie’. “The playground has not been sold to anybody. Rather, it has been taken up by squatters and a contractor,” he said.
Bhikhari said it has been observed that for the past two weeks or so, a contractor, Narendra Latchman, has been squatting with his equipment on the playground. However, this is being done without the permission of the NDC. He said the council gave the contractor notice to remove from the land, but he has in violation of the order continued to occupy the land. He has also failed to respond to the council, either verbally or in any documented form.
Another burning issue, the chairman noted, is the presence of about 10 families squatting on the same Logwood playground for about 10 years now. He said the council had given the squatters notice to remove, but they too have failed to do so.
The chairman noted that what is worrying is that some of the squatters had bona fide lands which they have now sold, even as they continue to squat on the playground.
Noting that the Kaieteur News article constitutes a gross misrepresentation of the facts, the NDC chairman is calling on the newspaper to “ …get their act together and get the facts [their information] right.”
