THE Friendship murder trial in which Steven Andrews and Roger Vyphuis are indicted for the murder of Dulsie Trim, called ‘Dolly’, on May 18, 2008, began yesterday at the Demerara Assizes with a voir dire (a trial within a trial) to determine admissibility of a caution statement allegedly made by one of the two accused.
Prosecutor Renita Singh, who in association with lawyer Miss Diana Kaulesar is prosecuting, decided to begin the case with a voir dire, instead of the usual opening address to the jury.
As a consequence, Justice Dawn Gregory is conducting the voir dire in the absence of the jury.
Attorney-at-law Miss Sonia Parag is representing the accused Andrews, while lawyer Mr. Nigel Hughes is appearing for Vyphuis.
The hearing continues today.
