THE police are on the hunt for a group of men who stabbed two brothers on Mashramani night on Vlissingen Road resulting in the subsequent death of one of them and the hospitalisation of the other who has since been discharged.
Dead is 25- year old Kumar Mohabir of 7, Fernandes Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara while his brother who lives a short distance from him at Lot 160 Market Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara received several stab wounds about his body and had to receive dozens of stitches about the body including his head, hands, back and face.
Yesterday when this publication visited the home of their mother she could hardly be consoled and was surrounded by family members. The woman who owns a shop explained that they also do tent rental and that her 25-year old son would normally run the business.
A tearful Ms. Nasmoon Mohabir said that a neighbour who had a stall along Vlissingen Road on Mash day, as is customary decided to rent a tent from them. She said that her son would normally go and fit up the tents for the persons who rent them since they often have problems assembling and disassembling same.
According to her, the now dead man left his home at approximately 07:00 hrs on Mashramani morning to set up the tent. Upon his return later that morning he asked her if she was willing to visit the float parade to which she responded in the negative.
Ms Mohabir told the Chronicle that later that day her older son Navendra Mohabir came across to her home along with his two children ages six and seven. She said that they along with another granddaughter, a nine-year old left in the afternoon to view the float parade.
The woman said that based on her information as related by her older son who survived the deadly attack they had finished walking the Mash route and stopped at the tent they had rented to purchase three juices for the children. The woman said that as soon as her son reached the tent, she is not aware if he mashed someone’s toe or jammed someone by mistake but he received one cuff to his face and as he went down, he was lashed to the head with a bottle.
She said that the other men at the tent then began to stab her son about the body with objects which she suspected were bottles based on the information she received. According to her when the older brother saw his younger brother being attacked he shouted to him to run but realised that he was unable to do so.
It was at that point that he rushed over to the tent and threw himself on his badly wounded brother to prevent the men from continuing their attack on him. However the men then turned their attention on him and he began receiving the additional stabs which were intended for his brother.
At that point the entire area became chaotic and there were rains of bottles and mini fights as a result of the initial assault. The older brother, Navendra Mohabir then managed to get his brother out of the crowd and rushed him to the Woodlands Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries at 03:00 hrs yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon the grieving mother disclosed that she bore only three children and the one who died was the youngest. The woman described him as her “gold” and stated that he was the “gold spoon” in her home.
Yesterday too we caught up with the wounded brother who was discharged from hospital. His body could be seen bandaged up at parts while his face and head were stained with blood and had several stitches.
He had just left the BV Police Station where he was asked by the police to visit as they had apprehended a few persons who they suspect to be the attackers of him and his brother.
Navendra told the Chronicle that he knows the men who attacked his brother and he related that bit to the police including the address for one of them who lives in Better Hope on the lower East Coast of Demerara.
Yesterday when the police visited that location the man was not home. The injured man also stated that the men the police asked him to identify as the attackers were not the ones who attacked him. They were then released. He related to the Chronicle that after stabbing him and his brother the men escaped in a white 212 Toyota motor car PPP 5962. Today the police are expected to check with the licence office where they will secure the registration information for the owner of the car as they seek to lay their hands on the persons who were in the vehicle on the night of the crime.
Mahendra stated that while he was at the hospital the same car arrived there with one of its occupants and as the driver of the car saw him, he sped off.
The mother of the men yesterday said that the entire ordeal has left her shaken and called on the police to move swiftly and ensure that justice is served to the family and with the apprehension of the men who murdered her son and injured another.
She said that her now dead son was not married and was hoping to do so in the near future.
