As school violence continues… : Fifth former stabs first former in head with scissors

UP to press time last night, the parents of 13-year-old Neil Miggins were praying and hoping that their son would have a complete recovery as he was battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital. This was after he  underwent emergency surgery to remove a pair of scissors which were stuck in his head.
Last night the Guyana Chronicle was informed that doctors were successful in removing the scissors from the child’s head and he was later placed on a life-support machine.
Earlier yesterday, his mother was told by the doctors that she had to sign papers authorising the surgery as it was a matter of life or death.
The child is a First Former at Patentia Secondary School, and according to reports, he was stabbed by a fifth former.
The boy who is accused of committing the act told the police and teachers at the school that the young student was interfering with him and threw the scissors at him.
However, Debra Miggins, the child’s mother told the Chronicle a different story.
Slipping in and out of consciousness, the boy told her that he was running down the school stairs when he accidentally bumped into the older student. The older boy then stabbed him in the head with the scissors.

The woman at the GPHC explained that the doctors informed her that they may need to make another hole in the child’s head to take out the scissors which was causing internal bleeding.
According to the child’s mother, she was at home when a vehicle pulled up and enquired about her. She said that she identified herself and she was told by the driver that she needed to join the vehicle since they had to visit the hospital for an emergency.
The woman said that she immediately joined the vehicle and upon entering she saw her son sitting in the vehicle with the scissors protruding from his head. Miggins said that they first went to the West Demerara Hospital and were later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Although she was not sure that her son would survive, the woman expressed concern about the  violence in the school system and called on students to get a grip of themselves and stop injuring each other.
The woman recalled the shooting to death of a student of the same school some years ago.
