Suspect in Ruimveldt hotel murder detained, released

POLICE ‘A’ Division Commander George Vyphuis disclosed, yesterday, that a suspect had been detained in connection with the recent pre-dawn execution style murder of well-known businessman Imtiaz Roopnarine but was subsequently released.

altThe Assistant Commissioner explained that the man held was not fingered on an identification parade, and after the holding period expired he was let go pending further investigations.
Roopnarine called ‘Bobby’ was gunned down, on January 24, while leaving a hotel in Marigold Street, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, in company with a woman.
Police have since revealed that Roopnarine was a deportee from the United States (U.S.) and they were reviewing his background.
The 47-year-old man, of Lot 208 Mandela Avenue, also in the city, was cut down by a hail of bullets when he was cornered in the backyard of Cool Square Hotel.
He had left home the night before to go and socialise with friends.  It is unsure how much money he had, but because he was a known lavish spender, he may have been trailed to the location where he was killed.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and the jewellery he was wearing is missing.
