Permaul to lead Guyana in WICB Regional tournaments : … Chanderpaul, Ivan and Adams the new faces

WEST INDIES ‘A’ team and national CT20 skipper Veerasammy Permaul has been tasked with the responsibility of leading Guyana in the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional four-day and Super50 limited overs tournament respectively. He will be leading a team that includes national Under-19 opening batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the son of dependable West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is the lone new face for the four-day lineup.
Ricardo Adams and Rajiv Ivan are the other new faces in the Super50 squad, selected by Guyana Cricket Board Chairman of Selectors Rayon Griffith and his team, last Saturday.
Notable absentees from both squads are Royston Crandon, Sewnarine Chattergoon (who has been impressive with the bat for GT&T Berbice of late), Richard Ramdeen, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Vishal Singh, who have all been placed on the standby list.
Rajendra Chandrika, Leon Johnson, who was named vice-captain to Permaul for the four-day tournament, Christopher Barnwell (the Super50 vice-captain), Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Ronsford Beaton, Devendra Bishoo, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph and Amir Khan are all included for the four- day tournament.
Chandrika and the younger Chanderpaul will open Guyana’s batting and following the unavailability of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine, who will be away on West Indies duties in Australia and Shiv Chanderpaul, who has been given a No Objection Certificate to participate in the Bangladesh Premier League, Johnson, Barnwell, Fudadin and Jacobs will form the core of the middle order batting.
With that in mind, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, will at the age of 16 years old emulate his dad and make his first-class debut as a teenager, when Guyana take on the Leeward Islands at the Antigua Recreation Ground February 9 -.12
Beaton, Wintz and Joseph will take care of the new ball, with valuable support from a red-hot Barnwell, while Permaul, Bishoo, Jacobs, Khan, Fudadin and even Johnson, can lend support with the ball for the Guyanese who reached the semis in this format last year before bowing out to defending champions Jamaica.
With regard to the Super50, Ivan and Adams join Chandrika, who will open the batting with a pugnacious Trevon Griffith, while Johnson, Jacobs, Ivan, Fudadin, Christian, Barnwell and to an extent Adams will shore up the middle and lower order for Guyana, who have failed to reach the final four in this version of the game since 2010.
Looking at their performance in the just concluded WICB CT20 tournament, in which they lost in the final to triple champions Trinidad and Tobago, the Guyanese can very well churn out a credible performance in the Super50, even going all the way to take the title.
With the WICB giving their Territorial Boards the opportunity to make changes at the conclusion of every round in both formats of the game, cricket-lovers can very well see a renewed Guyana team taking on their Regional opponents in this year’s tournament.
The Guyana four-day squad reads: Rajendra Chandrika, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Leon Johnson, (vice-captain), Assad Fudadin, Christopher Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Veerasammy Permaul (captain), Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph and Amir Khan.
Super50 squad: Rajendra Chandrika, Trevon Griffith, Leon Johnson, Assad Fudadin, Christopher Barnwell (vice-captain), Steven Jacobs, Rajiv Ivan, Derwin Christian, Veerasammy Permaul (captain), Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz and Ricardo Adams.
Standby players are: Delbert Hicks, Anthony Bramble, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Vishal Singh, Zaheer Mohamed, Royston Crandon, Brandon Bess, Richard Ramdeen, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Anthony Adams, Delon Heyliger, Clinton Pestano, Robin Bacchus, Andre Stoll and Jason Sinclair.
