GCB 4-Day Inter-County : Demerara in strong position to force outright win : … rain, no play at Wales

DESPITE two stoppages for rain, Demerara have placed themselves in line for a comfortable outright win heading into today’s final day in their Guyana Cricket Board Senior Inter-county four-day match against GT&T Berbice at the Everest Cricket Club ground. Resuming on their overnight score of 286 for 7, Demerara did not last long as the defending champions used a mere six overs to bowl them out for 290 for a lead of 122 runs. GT&T Berbice then reached 185 for 9 with Sewnarine Chattergoon making a resilient 89 against the bowling of Zaheer Mohammed who has so far taken 5 for 35 with his off-spin.
Across at the Wales Community Centre ground, no play was possible on the penultimate day yesterday in the contest between Essequibo and the President’s XI, who were set to resume on 8 without loss, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 1 and Kevon Boodie yet to score.
At Everest, GT&T Berbice saw Richard Ramdeen and Chattergoon give them an enterprising start just before lunch, wherein they added 39 for the first wicket from 9.4 overs.
Ramdeen was in a pugnacious mood, hitting Paul Wintz over the head of Chandrapaul Hemraj at gully for four, while Chattergoon dispatched the same bowler over cover point for six, before Chattergoon drove Andre Stoll audaciously past mid on for his first four.
GT&T Berbice lost Ramdeen, who was caught at the wicket by Joseph Perry off Zaheer Mohammed for 13 (2×4), followed by Gajanand Singh who was lbw to the same bowler off the next delivery, leaving their team on 39 for 2, with Chattergoon who was joined by his skipper Assad Fudadin, on 20.
At lunch, GT&T Berbice had erased 57 of those runs from 17 overs for the loss of the wickets mentioned above, with Chattergoon on 30 and Fudadin 8, while Mohammed had so far taken 2 for 6 for Demerara, who need an outright win to take the title.
After lunch, Chattergoon brought up his third half-century in this year’s tournament, taking 121 minutes to do so off 95 deliveries with four fours and one six, before he pulled Amir Khan over wide midwicket for his second six, pushing GT&T Berbice to 110 for 2 when rain stopped play at 13:31hrs, with his personal score being 69 and Fudadin 21.
When play resumed, Fudadin and Chattergoon erased the deficit, while adding 88 valuable runs for the third wicket, before Fudadin was lbw to Shaquille Williams on the stroke of tea for a boundary-less 22, while Chattergoon was on 79 and GT&T Berbice 127 for 3, a lead of 5 runs.
After tea, the Berbicians lost Jason Sinclair who was bowled by Mohammed for 5 and even though Chattergoon worked Williams off his legs for four through backward squareleg for one of his six fours, he saw the demise of Delbert Hicks (3), who was caught at the wicket by Joseph Perry off Mohammed.
Demerara continued their march to victory, when they removed Chattergoon for 89, with the left-handed batsman being caught by Rajendra Chandrika at slip off Mohammed, having faced 214 deliveries while batting for 192 minutes, hitting six fours and two sixes.
A brief shower forced the players off the field at 15:50hrs, with GT&T Berbice shakily placed on 147 for 6, a lead of 25 runs with four wickets in hand.
The rain interruption did little to GT&T Berbice’s cause, as they lost the wickets of Clinton Pestano (2), Zamal Khan (7) and Eon Hooper 13 (1×4), to be 174 for 9, as Keon Joseph strolled to the wicket in slightly overcast conditions, to join Gudakesh Motie.
At the close of play, GT&T Berbice were 185 for 9 off 72 overs, an overall lead of 63 runs with Motie on 8 which included a cut through point off Mohammed for four and Joseph 6.
Mohammed has so far taken 5 for 35 and Amir Khan 2 for 63 for Demerara, who will go in search of the outright win when play continues at 09:00hrs today, weather permitting, by taking the final wicket of the opposition as early as possible, giving their batsmen adequate time to record the required runs for victory.
Earlier in the day, Demerara, who resumed on 286 for 7 with Joseph Perry on 31 and Wintz 2, were bowled out within the first six overs of the day’s play, losing the wickets of Perry for 33 (107 balls, 2×4), Khan (0) and Andre Stoll (1), leaving Wintz unbeaten on his overnight score, thanks to the bowling of Eon Hooper and Gudakesh Motie who ended with four wickets each for 60 and 68 runs respectively.
Perry was sent back in the fourth over of the day, caught low down by wicketkeeper Jason Sinclair off Motie, after adding two runs to his and the team’s score.
He was quickly followed by Amir Khan who failed to trouble the scorers, when he was bowled by Eon Hooper in the following over, before Motie bowled Stoll with the first delivery of the 131st over of Demerara innings, bringing it to a close.
